The Institute of Computer ·Information and Communication

Purpose of establishment

The Institute of Computer·Information and Communication was established in 1996 to secure advanced technology by conducting comprehensive and systematic research in the field of computer science. The institute is a comprehensive research institute that conducts research in all of the research fields in the Department of Computer Science and it oversees 33 labs and supports leading research in line with global IT/software trends.

 

Research areas

The institute maintains close partnerships with universities, research institutes, and industries and plays a pivotal role in basic science research and applications. The institute performs the following tasks to induce active mutual participation. 

- Joint research projects

- Placement of researchers at companies and universities

- Maximization of activity through joint use of research equipment

- Technical training and education

- Technical consulting and information provision

 

Recent research achievements (Large-scale Research Project Group)

The Institute of Computer·Information and Communication has been entrusted with about 60 projects totaling 4 billion in the past three years for research in various fields, such as hardware, software, and algorithm development and improvement.

The Next-generation Game Research Center aims to develop core technologies in the gaming field and to cultivate excellent research personnel in this field.

Research areas

- Programs for on-campus students

The institute is developing programs that foster cooperation and improve computational thinking through various programs for students at the school.

- Seminar to prep candidates for teacher appointment

The institute is cultivating teacher candidates through seminars to prepare for information-field teaching opportunities.

- Programs to rapidly increase interest in software from suburban elementary and middle school students

By signing an MOU with secondary schools and hosting software camps and competitions, the institute fosters student interest in software. Through a mentoring system organized by the software Education Volunteer Group, mentors donate talent to underprivileged students and inspire their spirits of service, and the elementary, middle and high school mentee students are encouraged to improve their problem-solving abilities through computational thinking.

- Methodologies of computer education, development of teaching tools and computer-based research

The institute researches new educational methods targeting digital convergence and preparation for changes within a ubiquitous educational environment. In addition, various research projects are underway to secure leadership in the future era through information creativity education.

 

Recent research achievements (Large-scale Research Project Group)

The institute has hosted a software camp for freshman and an iOS app development hackathon for students on campus. The institute contributes to teacher training by holding a seminar to help prepare informatics-field teacher candidates for appointment opportunities. Volunteers were recruited for the SW Volunteer Group and software camps were held at Seoul National University Middle School, Joongang High School, and Iil Girls' High School for elementary and middle school students. Active academic research is ongoing, including 50 to 70 papers published in leading domestic and international academic journals every year.

Purpose of establishment

A specialized research institute established to improve research competitiveness through leading domestic brain engineering research and a research and education system.

  • Securing a leading position in the field of brain engineering which is emerging as a core convergence technology of the future

  • Securing original technology in the field of brain engineering – the “El Dorado” of the future industry

  • Using the Brain Engineering Research Center as a research hub to reaffirm the status of the university and to improve research competitiveness through joint research and information sharing with world-renowned research institutes

Research areas

The institute embraces changes in the global research paradigm and conducts research on the original technology of brain engineering, a core field in the future industry.

  • Research in cognitive brain science

    • Research on the characteristics of brain information processing by exploring the essential characteristics of the human brain or mind through interdisciplinary fusion such as cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, biology, and linguistics, and acquiring, constructing, and utilizing information and knowledge

  • Research on brain-machine interface technology 

    • Research on methods of measuring and analyzing cranial nerve signals to control external devices, transmitting human intentions to the outside world, and technology to diagnose and predict cranial nerve damage and brain diseases. 

  • Neuromorphic engineering technology research

    • Based on the understanding of the brain's information processing and cognitive process mechanisms, theoretical research and core technology enhancement for the development of a system or neuromorphic chip that simulates brain functions

Recent research achievements
  • A total of 67 SCI papers in the field of brain engineering and artificial intelligence over the past 5 years (a total of 28 papers within the top 10% of JCR IF rankings)

  • 4 international patent applications, 18 domestic patent registrations, 50 domestic patent applications, and 5 technology transfers in the last 3 years

  • Joint research with leading overseas research institutes (e.g. TU Berlin, EPFL, UNC-CH) and numerous of industry-academic cooperation efforts (e.g. Microsoft, SKT, Samsung)

Recent research achievements (Large-scale Research Project Group)

The Institute of Convergence IT closely cooperated with Korea University Medical Center to win a contract for a national strategic project for precision medical services. The precision medical business is a new paradigm that goes beyond the existing treatment paradigm and diagnoses the patient's disease by processing patient DNA information, treatment history, and recent medical research results with artificial intelligence. The institute will continue to contribute to improving the quality of care by continuously integrating software technology into the medical industry.

 
 

Center for Software Security and Assurance

Research areas Purpose of establishment

The Center for Software Security and Assurance (CSSA) has developed and opened up to the world an automatic security vulnerability analysis platform, IoTcube (https://iotcube.net), allowing anyone to professionally analyze security problems without being a security expert. With six laboratories at Korea University as the main pillar, the institute aims to cultivate global leaders in the security field by conducting research with the best experts in the field of security vulnerability analysis, including the US CMU, USC (i3 consortium), and Swiss ETH.

 

Research areas Research areas

The institute researches and develops core technologies for the automation of security vulnerability analysis in convergence industries such as 5G, IoT, and blockchain - the implementation technologies of the 4th industrial revolution. It also conducts international joint research and academic activities with world-class research groups in computer science. To raise national security awareness, the institute hosts regular seminars, contests, conferences, and educational programs, including training security experts. In addition, various types of external cooperation programs such as night study groups, memberships, and intelligence consortiums are in operation.

  • Development of automatic analysis technology for IoT software security vulnerabilities (2015-2018, total government grant of 3 billion won)

  • Development of self-learning cyber immunity technology (2017-2020, total government grant of 1.42 billion won)

Human-Inspired AI Research

Purpose of establishment

The final goal is to develop multi-modal-based complex intelligence source technology that transcends the five senses of humans by reflecting the effective principles of human learning. Through this, the center researches and develops technologies for each application service field suitable for the 4th industrial revolution, represented by technologies such as automation knowledge work and IoT. In addition, the center was established to develop demand-oriented artificial intelligence-related technologies through the establishment of an organic cooperation system with related industries and related organizations, and to escape dependence on foreign countries and improve national competitiveness through the development of source technologies and specialized software.

 
Research areas

The Human Inspired AI & Computing Research Center conducts research on machine learning models that mimic human learning principles, complex intelligence AI technology research for effective learning, multimodal knowledge expression, acquisition and reasoning technology convergence research, and active knowledge recommendation technology.

 
Recent research achievements (Large-scale Research Project Group)

The Human-inspired AI & Computing Research Center oversees the operation of creative and autonomous projects and introduced a convergent professional human resources training system for students from various majors. The center conducts multidisciplinary convergence research by securing a space for convergence research to foster professional human resources. 

 

 

Institute for Artificial Intelligence

Purpose of establishment

The aim is to contribute to the development of domestic and overseas artificial intelligence research and application industries by researching, analyzing, and developing technologies and policies in artificial intelligence and related fields to secure global level AI core technology capabilities.

  • With the establishment of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and of an artificial intelligence research center, an education/research system has been efficiently established, thereby cultivating professional human resources to the same level as the world's most prestigious education and research institutions in the pursuit of research results.

    To achieve world-class research competitiveness by utilizing artificial intelligence research centers to secure global level AI and core technology capabilities that can create high added value, and support joint research spaces, specialized research personnel, and expensive laboratory equipment.

    o cultivate creative, convergent, capable talent in individuals with R&D capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence, to revitalize industry-academia cooperation, develop joint research and research cooperation programs with small and medium-sized companies, and to support advanced doctoral-level experts to conduct relevant research.
